Trunk Carpeting Empty

I need to do some work on my tail lights. One is out (either by bad connection or bad bulb) and the other is cracked. I need to check the bulb and wiring on one and replace the other. But the carpeting in the trunk is getting in the way and I'm afraid to rip it if I try to pull it away too roughly. On the left side there are screws holding the carpet in, but when I try to remove them they only spin in place and do not back out. Any suggestions, tips?
